National Women’s Studies Association (NSWA) Women of Color Caucus Student Essay Awards

GENERAL MANUSCRIPT REQUIREMENTS
Manuscripts for all categories must:
• be original and unpublished
• be between 15 and 25 pages, excluding bibliography
• be submitted on white, letter quality paper, with clearly legible text (onion skin paper, etc. will not be reviewed).
• be in 12 point font, double-spaced, with 1” margins on all sides and with page numbers centered at the bottom of each page
• include in the upper right corner of the title page only- the writer’s name, temporary and permanent addresses, phone number and email address, college or university affiliation, and student status (undergraduate, graduate, or eligible postgraduate)
CATEGORY I: WOMEN OF COLOR CAUCUS STUDENT ESSAY AWARDS
The purpose of the Women of Color Caucus Student Essay Awards is to discover, encourage, and promote the intellectual development of emerging Black women scholars who engage in critical theoretical discussions and/or analysis about feminist/womanist issues concerning women and girls of color.
One (1) $400.00 award is available for students enrolled in undergraduate, graduate or professional programs. Recent Ph.D. recipients are also eligible. The deadline for submission is February 15. No award will be given if there are no suitable submissions.
Eligibility Requirements
• Scholarly essays must provide critical theoretical discussions and/or analysis of issues/experiences of women and girls of African descent in the and/or throughout the Diaspora.
• Writer submitting essay must be a woman of African descent who is currently enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate or professional program. Recent Ph.D. recipients are also eligible.
• Winning submissions require official verification of student or post-graduate status upon notification of award.
• Winners will be notified on or around May 1.
• No award will be given if there are no suitable submissions.

CATEGORY II: THE WOMEN OF COLOR CAUCUS-SCOTT POWELL MEMORIAL STUDENT ESSAY AWARD
Eligibility Requirements
• Scholarly essays must provide critical theoretical discussions and/or analysis of issues/experiences of women and girls of African, Latina/o, Asian/Asian-American/Pacific-Islander, or Native American/American Indian/Alaskan Native descent- nationally and/or internationally. One (1) award is available for students enrolled in undergraduate, graduate or professional programs. Recent Ph.D. recipients are also eligible.
• Writer submitting essay may be of any race-ethnicity and gender, but must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program, or who has recently received a Ph.D.
• Submit three copies of essay to Dr. Pat Washington, postmarked by the submission deadline.
• Winning submission requires official verification of student or post-graduate status upon notification of award.
• Winners will be notified on or around May 1.
• No award will be given if there are no suitable submissions.

The Women of Color Caucus seeks to acknowledge emerging scholars researching women of color by sponsoring the Women of Color Caucus Student Essay writing awards ($400.00 each) for one Latina , one Asian/Asian-American/Pacific-Islander woman, and one Native American/American Indian/Alaskan Native woman enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate or professional program. Recent Ph.D. recipients are also eligible. No award will be given if there are no suitable submissions. We have not yet identified venues for publishing winning entries in this category, but efforts are ongoing.

- Writer submitting essay must be a woman of Latina/o, Asian/Asian-American/Pacific-Islander or Native American/American Indian/Alaskan Native descent who is currently enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate or professional program. Recent Ph.D. recipients are also eligible.
- Winning submissions require official verification of student or post-graduate status upon notification of award.

Essay Receipt Notification
Receipt of your essay will be confirmed via email. If you do not have an email address, but wish to have receipt confirmation, include a stamped, self-addressed postcard along with your submission.
Notification of Essay Award Outcomes
Award recipients will be contacted by a member of the appropriate Student Essay Award Committee on or around May 1. Award winners will be encouraged (but not required) to present their work at the NWSA Annual Conference.
All other entrants will receive notice of award outcomes via email or postcard.
Return of Essays
Essays will not be returned. Do not send original (or only) copy of your work.

The NWSA Women of Color Caucus and Catherine Powell are pleased to offer one (1) writing award ($400.00) open to students of any race/ethnicity or gender who meet both general and category-specific eligibility and submission requirements. The deadline for submissions in each category is February 15. No award will be given if there are no suitable submissions.
